Why do people take their sick kids out in public? Are people just clueless? Thoughtless? Ignorant? Do they just not care about anyone but themselves? I just don’t get it.
One Sunday I went to nurse my newborn baby in a mother’s lounge, and as I entered two mothers in the room who were also nursing were conversing about their babies being sick. One of them said, “My baby has these boils on her skin and we don’t know why. They’re filled with puss and just aren’t healing well. I feel so bad for her.” The other mother replied, “Yeah, my baby had such a high fever last night and was throwing up. She’s so sick. I hope none of my other children catch it.”
AHHHHHH!!! What on earth? Were they serious? And here they were at church, in an enclosed building full of people and children. Were they determined to make others suffer because they had to? Did they even consider staying home to protect others from their diseased children? Why do people feel they can’t stay home if a child is sick? WHY??!
It just make me so mad. Needless to say, I turned around and walked right back out of that mother’s lounge, and probably should have gone home.
Yesterday, a family with a household of sick kids decided that they wanted to get out and have some fun. At first they considered going to an indoor family center full of toys and games, then they thought maybe they’d go to a movie theater. At last, they chose to go swimming! I’m sure they all had a wonderful time, but did they even consider how rude it was to take their sick children out in public where their germs would be spread in every which manner to so many unsuspecting children and families? Seriously, THIS IS PRECISELY WHY PREEMIES ARE QUARANTINED and why I am always nervous when I take my preemie toddler to an enclosed public entertainment center. Some people are careless and some are just plain rude.
Please, if your kids are sick…STAY HOME!! For the sake of everyone around you, and especially for the sake of people with vulnerable children and weak immune systems. You just don’t know how difficult it is to be so restricted and isolated because you have to protect your weak child. Children with weak immune systems or weak lungs (like many or most preemies) don’t get a cough if they’re exposed to children with a cough. They get croup or pneumonia. Sometimes they’re hospitalized because of it, and almost always they have to go on medications, inhalers, humidifiers, or whatever else to recover.
Please, just be considerate and think about those around you. If you are sick, stay home. If your child is sick, stay home. If your dog is sick, stay home… just kidding .
Do you get my drift?? Please…….. just……… think. Okay? Think about someone besides yourself.
