My son was born at 28 weeks and spent a total of 15 weeks in the NICU, 3 weeks past his due date, due to undiagnosed and partially untreated (for a while) reflux and the resultant inability to take all his feeds by mouth. :) He is happily at home, healthy, but still does have reflux issues.

My son was a 28 weeker who had an unremarkable NICU stay - one infection, off of oxygen in 29 days, no PDA, NEC, or IVH, just a normal little kid. However, he did have a rather bad case of reflux. He was an unhappy spitter. After a month of the nurses doing things like placing his plastic bassinett tub at an angle and other tactics, and us trying to get him up to full feeds but him resisting as we did so, finally, someone in charge noticed his projectile vomit and decided he had reflux. (Ya think?) They riced his formula and put him on Zantac and things were better but not perfect. The rice stopped up the nipple, he had a lot of gas, and he still upchucked on a frequent basis. After his due date came and went, I started to get a little too antsy ... he was gaining but not gaining in the drinking department. Then someone refigured out his nutritional content of his feeds - the added rice had increased his calorie count, so the massive amount they wanted him to take was in fact wrong -- he could get by with less. And life was a lot happier. Within a week, he was home, thank goodness. And he is now being seen by a pediatric gastroenterologist (who wsa never consulted while he was in the NICU), who is addressing his reflux needs by placing him on a medication that increases stomach motility, thank godness, thus reducing the spitups, the reflux, everything. So, in all, he went home 3 weeks past his due date.

My daughter was born at 23 wks 2days!! O
1lb 5oz....it has been 162 days and she was discharged from the nicu on day 150 at 9lbs and transferred to an inpatient rehab center to help with her bottling....she is off of oxygen support which is amazing...she has a paralyzed vocal cord from her PDA surgery so she sometimes aspirated when she swallows so they are waiting for her other vocal cord to get strong enough to compensate so she can bottle....so she should b home in 8 wks or so....a whole 4months past her due date!! Hope this makes you feel better! We are so fortunate and have learned to be patient and it's so difficult sometimes but it's so worth it!

Thank you for sharing. I need to always remember what a blessing it was that my preemie was so healthy. All of the time spent in the NICU was necessary and I felt good knowing she was strong enough to come home when the day finally arrived. It was still hard being there so long, but my sweetie survived and is a joy and blessing in my life.

My daughter was born at 26weeks 4day weighed 1lb 10 oz. I was told she would come home around her due date but not to excpect her home before than. The nurse never gave me a date. I did not know my daughter was coming home till the morning she came home. She came home about 2 weeks after her due date we were in the hospital 115 days and she weighed 8lbs 6oz when she came home.
Of course I wanted her home but I was patient I knew she come home when the time was right. I just felt blessed to have her in my life.

My preemie came home 9 days before her due date at 38 weeks and 2 days. She weighed 4 pounds, 6 ounces at discharge.

Our nurses weren't as positive about her coming home on or before her due date. They would admit it was a possibility, but wouldn't give us the for sure until the day that she came home.
