When my daughters were first born we kept them home 5 months before heading out. The next year during RSV session they could only go to church and a close friends house and family. The third year during RSV session they had to have hands washed about every half hour or going to and leave from every place. They is pretty much how we have stayed. It gets easier each year and after three they are much stronger and usually don't get sick too often comparatively. You want kids to be kids but at the same time keep them healthy. 

The best thing is keep them AWAY from anyone who has even a cough and wash their hands every time you think of it.
