Finding Hope in the NICU: National Doctors’ Day

On March 30, National Doctors’ Day, physicians across the country are recognized for their work. I always had an appreciation for doctors and their ability to see the big picture as well as the important details, but I never knew how much a doctor could change my life until my son was born four months early.

It was 11 o’clock at night when I first met my son’s neonatologist. When he approached us, I bombarded him with questions. Worry and anxiety spewed from my mouth and heart with an intensity that intimidated even me.

NICU Hero Highlight: Dr. Aryan Azimi-Zonooz

Neonatologist Aryan Azimi-Zonooz, M.D., of St. Charles Medical System in Bend, Oregon, routinely cares for fragile preemie babies. But the care he took for baby Aviv, son of Jill Leonard, touched the family deeply and prompted her to share her story with others. Little Aviv, who was born at 37 ½ weeks, was diagnosed with pneumonia and a collapsed lung within an hour of birth. Over the next few days, Jill noticed Dr. Azimi-Zonooz’s clean-shaven face grow a full beard, as he led Aviv’s care and recovery. He never left the hospital. [Read more]
